Hospital mourns the death of dedicated Hematology nurse

The St. Jude community mourns the death of Janice Sanford, Hematology, who passed away at her home February 21. Stanford was a highly honored and respected pediatric nurse who served in her profession for more than 30 years.

For the past 10 years, she has been a beloved colleague in St. Jude Hematology where she worked as a sickle cell disease case manager and most recently as a general hematology nurse case manager. While working at the hospital, she made many friends and marked a career milestone in 2000 when she was honored by Celebrate Nursing as one of the Top 100 Nurses in Shelby County.

“Janice had the sweetest disposition. She was soft spoken and always smiling. She had a fierce love for her patients and even stayed in touch with many after they moved away. Her office was filled with pictures of ‘her’ kids (patients),” said Susan Strawn, Hematology, who worked with Sanford in the nursing field for 18 years.

Sanford enjoyed music, making jewelry, gardening, caring for her pets and cooking for her husband, David, and son, William. “Her home had an open-door policy and you always felt welcome,” Strawn said. “She was the ultimate hostess.”

“She was a friend to all in our group and someone we will always miss,” said Lynn Wynn, Hematology, who described Sanford as a wonderful nurse with a contagious laugh. Wynn and other colleagues praised Sanford’s dedication to her patients and the hospital.

Her greatest wish was recently fulfilled with the transfer of our Hematology patients and clinics to the St. Jude campus,” Strawn said. “She was so proud to work for St. Jude.” Sanford’s excellent nursing care, kind spirit and dedication to the hospital’s mission touched many patients, families and friends. Please keep Sanford’s family in your thoughts and prayers.
